can download vista beta 2

Where can I download Vista Beta 2?

Can someone tell me where I can download Vista Beta 2?
TIA,
Clayton

At the present time you would need to be a bonafide Beta tester or have a subscription to MSDN and or Tech Net.
It is not available to the public at present

You probably won't get it (Windows Vista 5308 CTP) until your April Shipment, because Microsoft does not let Technet Plus Subscriber's Download Technet Plus Beta's from their Technet Plus Website. You should have signed up for an MSDN Operating Systems Level Subscription, if both of the following conditions are true: 1. You have Broadband (5308 CTP with MSDN is Download Only) and 2. You wanted quicker access to 5308 CTP.

P.S. It looks like Zack was wrong, and I was right (Technet Plus March Shipment was incorrect, Technet Plus April Shipment will hopefully be correct so that I can win our Bet)!
P.P.S. Thank God that I am an MSDN OS Level Subscriber and not a Technet Plus Subscriber!

Hmm.. so it looks like I'm SOL regarding this months testing? I had to blow away the beta 1, it was agonizing to work with. The CTP beta was just as bad, maybe even worse. I have a monster system and this was a dog on in. My XP 64bit works great but I'm tired of it now. Oh well, now maybe I can do some real work this month. :-|

Kevin, that date cannot be confirmed because the build hasn't been released yet. General rule of thumb... you will only know the date that a build is released is when it's released.

In the future it would be best to keep such posts to a forum that deals in piracy and other unethical distributions, this is not the place.

I have a key, but a problem with installing build 5112 (I've posted here before) since the Vista install would not accept my key. After being accused of trying to install pirated software, I do have the info on the membership the school I am going to has which is the MSDN Academic Alliance (I have found my school listed there on the Microsoft website) and my instructor explained to me that he gets the software with a certain number of keys, which he is able to give out to his students until they are all given out. Before this particular class ended my instructor conceeded that perhaps the key he gave my classmates and I was for a newer build than 5112 and that might be why the keys wouldn't work. When I asked about getting the newer build, he just told me to go to the Microsoft website and download it, which, of course, I am not able to do.
Needless to say, I am not happy with this instructor. I may issue a complaint with the school, but all that aside, and because of all these difficulties, I won't be bothering with Vista at all and just stick with learning all the other OSes out there. When Vista is finally released, I guess I'll just get a book and learn it then.
Patty

Patty; There were some issues with computers and memory. Even though they had sufficient memory, Vista still would not install. Try adding more memory if you have less than 512 MB.
The point of my other post was that getting Vista or any other software from a file sharing source is risky at best and not authorized at least for Microsoft software. That does not seem to apply in your case. You should complain to the school and have them make it right or determine if the instructor was distributing illegitimate software.
At some point there probably will be public access to Vista so you can get it then. Do not let possible incompetence of the instructor keep you away from Vista or anything else.

I do have a system just sitting around not being used at this time, but it doesn't have a DVD drive in it, it does have 512 MB RAM but the other hardware could be iffy for Vista also. I was trying to install it on my main system, but by using it in Virtual PC, which is how my instructor installed it for classroom use. I have 1GB RAM on the host system and was using 700MB RAM for the virtual system which is the instructions given to me by my teacher. At first I thought it was only me that was having problems, and the instructor said that "no one else has had trouble installing it except you," but I found that others in my class got the same error message I did, "Setup cannot validate your product key. Please review your product key and ensure that it has been entered correctly." I also know from reading the Virtual PC NG that others have sucessfully installed Vista that way. Anyhow, Benny (from this NG) suggested I try installing it on my main system in a separate partition as a dual boot, but right now, I'm just so jaded on the whole thing, I fear that if I try to do that, I'll just blow my whole system and have to start all over again setting it all up and reinstalling everything. Between school and work, I just don't have that much available time. So, I'm just sitting tight. Perhaps somewhere I'll find a copy of version 5270 (which I think is the one that followed 5112) and try to install it using my key. Whatever, I've spent so much time on this now, I am just tired of the whole thing.

The point of my other post was that getting Vista or any other software from a file sharing source is risky at best and not authorized at least for Microsoft software.

I've always avoided getting any executable software from file sharing. You just don't know what you're getting and even though anti-virus software is good, they still miss things. What a way to put yourself in a mess just trying to get something free. I admit, in the past, to downloading a song or two, but I even got away from that, since, IMO, the quality just isn't there. Maybe some folks don't mind the quality of what they're listening to, but I guess I'm more of a purist. Even when I built my new system, I was encouraged by some people I know to use a version of XP that had a corporate key that was passed around, but, instead I purchased an OEM version from the hardware vendor that I bought my motherboard and other components from. While I wanted to save money, I also wanted to do it right.

That does not seem to apply in your case. You should complain to the school and have them make it right or determine if the instructor was distributing illegitimate software.

I sincerely believe that the software the instructor was distributing was completely legitimate. I think that it's more of a case of the version and key not matching. Would a newer key work with an older version of Vista Beta? I'm not really sure, but that seems more likely to me. He would have a lot to lose if he were giving away illegimate software to his students and, while I don't think he's the greatest teacher, I really believe that he would not risk his job by doing that.

At some point there probably will be public access to Vista so you can get it then. Do not let possible incompetence of the instructor keep you away from Vista or anything else.

Yeah, eventually I'll try Vista. But more than likely not until it's released to the public and I have the funds to pay for it.
Thanks for all your comments and help. I was very upset when I was accused of trying to pirate Vista and get a key from someone here. I have a key. It should work. I just don't know why it doesn't (and no one else seems to know either.)

Patty; One point that I have not seen mentioned here. I suggest you NOT install Vista on your main system even if on a separate partition. There is always a slight possibility of problems and if you can not afford a Clean Installation and loss of data, any Beta is not for you. Right now I have Vista in a swappable drawer on a spare computer and it will go no further until I have more confidence in it.
The product keys for Vista are somewhat specific in that a key will only work for a narrow range of builds.
If you have or can borrow a spare hard drive even fore a day, you can swap that drive and see if Vista will install on your main computer. That way you may possibly verify your key. When you are done, you can swap back the drives and be right where you are right now. That also prevents any possibility of data corruption of your current data by installing the Beta.

Very good point - Vista is still quite unstable, even 5308 hasn't been certified as beta quality. I recommend (as well as Jupiter does) on a seperate computer altogether. You can install it on Virtual PC, however that can hold back some qualities such as Glass, but if you really must install it on a virtual machine, try Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 - that works a treat :o)

This is all very well. I could just buy the DVD and wait a week or so to get the installer.
But I am more concerned about whether this product will install on an Intel iMac. I ran the upgrade advisor, and it tells me that my iMac is compatible with the Universal version of Vista.
But will it install?

So the Apple BootCamp beta will allow one to install Vista on an Intel iMac?
I don't believe that Mr. Thurrott has the latest information, so I wouldn't trust anything he says.
Isn't Mr. Thurrott's information predicated on the proposition that Vista was going to use EFI, rather than a BIOS, as Vista currently does?
It was theoretically possible to install XP on an Intel iMac even before Apple released the BootCamp software, and Windows drivers for iMacs, and made it practically possible to dual-boot with XP. "Theoretically" possible and "practically" possible are two different things.
Yet Microsoft put a damper on the whole process when they removed the EFI module from Vista.
Anyway, hopefully, as soon as a few hackers have the Vista code in their hot little hands, someone will come up with a decent boot-loader for Vista on Intel iMacs.

Hi there, I have downloaded the new Vista Beta 2 and I was wondering a few things. With my Hewlett Packard, my drive is partitioned into 2 drive with my d: drive being the backup containing all the backups of my computer. If I install beta 2, will it screw up the drive and merge everything or will ot all be safe, incase I want to revert to Windows XP again? Would the upgrade feature work better for this? -- 3800+ AMD Athlon Processor 200 GB HDD 256 Meg Geforce Video

Who is the Windows Vista BETA 2 for? IT Professionals, Developers, Enthusiast, people who like to back up their data and try out new things and don't have issues just in case something goes wrong installing the software.
How should I install Windows Vista BETA 2? This is very important, ensure you are installing on a clean logical partition with enough free space. If you have a spare installation of Windows XP SP2 you don't mind ruining, you can upgrade from that or you can start the new installation by booting from the DVD drive, (make sure your boot drive in your BIOS is set to the optical drive). I launched setup from within XP, type in my Product Key > Accept the EULA > click Custom > select the partition you created for Windows Vista.
Note: If you want to upgrade Windows XP make sure you launch setup from within Windows XP SP2, upgrades are not supported by booting from the DVD. Upgrades are not supported for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition at all.
Most important of all, back up any important data you might have on that computer you plan on installing Vista. http://windowsconnected.com/blogs/andre/archive/2006/06/08/3002.aspx -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Booting from either a CD or a DVD is really the same thing. Most BIOS simply state CD/DVD. So setting the BIOS to boot from CD is also setting it to boot from DVD. Is you BIOS updated to the latest version?

With the Vista DVD it is NOT the same thing as a CD. The Vista DVD uses the UDFS file system. There have been numerous problems with XP UDFS failures (see Afterdawn.com posts), especially when related to watching/copying (backing up movie DVDs - also use UDFS)... There is even a few XP Support notes about this in the KB. One specifically explains how when you use XP to read a scratched DVD (having several read failures) can disable the UDFS and the ONLY way to get it back is to 'uninstall the IDE controller where your DVD is installed' -- it will be re-created and things put back to normal after rebooting...
It threw me for a loop when it happened to me, then the process in the KB saved the day... Your own mileage may vary!!! Search for UDFS in the XP section of the KnowledgeBase.

Booting from either a CD or a DVD is really the same thing. Most BIOS simply state CD/DVD. So setting the BIOS to boot from CD is also setting it to boot from DVD. Is you BIOS updated to the latest version?

If the problem is not as the last post suggested, and changing the boot order does not work to let you boot from the cd, then no, you cannot format and install with an xp cd.

My computer is unable to boot from my dvd drive. I plan on formatting my hard drive and reinstalling xp but the xp installation i have from Dell is on a dvd. I just need to know if it would still work even though it isn't a cd thanks. Please only serious responses not people complaining because someone else is asking questions.

Someone has had the same problem. I did write him and if I get a response for him that helps I will post it here. I did a reinstall and it is apparent that ColdFusion does not know how to set up IIS 7.
Any Help is Appreciated

Ken,
I am running IIS.7
I get the specifice message for the MIME and that the .cfm extension is not mapped. When I have gone into Mapping I have been able to allow the page accesss but I do not know how to Map it to ColdFusion so the pages are given to ColdFusion to Process.
Thanks for your response, I had almost given up.

As CFM is implemented as an ISAPI Extension, you do not need to add a MIME type mapping for CFM pages. On IIS 6.0 you'd need to add it as an allowed Web Service Extension.

The page you requested has a file name extension that is not recognized, and therefore is not allowed. "

I have been able to open the IIS Manager and get to the "Handler Mapping" and have even been able to put in the file extension but I do not know how to point it to the ColdFusion server/service. Do I add it as a "Manage Handler", a "Script Map", or a "Module Mapping"?
What do I have to do to add ColdFusion pages to MIME?

Hi,
I posted some instructions on manually setting up PHP on IIS 7 here: http://www.adopenstatic.com/cs/blogs/ken/archive/2006/02/08/84.aspx
the steps are basically the same - CF is an ISAPI extension just like PHP. You just need to reference the CF ISAPI dll rather than the PHP ISAPI dll. Also, if CF has any configuration files you'd have to manually configure those rather than php.ini
HTH
Cheers

Thank you so much, Ken!
I will try it right now. It seem to be a simple process, but it is one I have never done. I will post the results.
Your time and knowledge is appreciated, I hope that you are enjoying the Vista,
